MSN money just posted an article about 1.2 billion dollars in unclaimed 2004 return funds that about 1.3 million people are entitled to from that year. Many thought that their return was just too little and not worth filing for or they jut weren’t aware that they were entitled to that money. The catch is, in order for them to still get it, they must file a 2004 tax return by April 15th of this year. My question is, if these people didn’t even care about their return for that year, do you think that they would have the paperwork needed to file a return of the same year? I personally think not. So, I wonder where all of that money will go?
I do believe that there is about 1.2 billion that is unclaimed. That amount does not surprise me. What gets me is the fact that the information wasn’t released until recently, right before the “deadline.” I am a subject of “unclaimed funds” and was surprised when a month ago, my mother gave a government check for 46.81 that she found in my old room. It was from 2001 so I figured I would just mail it back to the state taxation office and call it a day. In my mind I was saying “they probably added this amount to my return for 2002 so i’m not expecting to get this money. I already got it!” Low and behold, I get a letter from the office of taxation about 2 weeks later saying “Ms (my maiden name), you are entitled to these funds and please expect your check to reach you by mail within the next 4 to 6 weeks.” 2 more weeks later, I got the check!
Now I have gone online to those sites that claim to tell you if you have unclaimed funds out there in the universe, and nothing ever popped up under my maiden or married name. That money would have been forever lost in the system and I wouldn’t have been the wiser. What are your feelings on this? Have you been fortunate enough to “find” money that belonged to you and was orginally unclaimed?
