In a little over 4 weeks, I’ll be attending the wedding of one of my military buddies. He went and got all fancy on us and is marrying the sweetest, most amazing girl who just happens to be a doctor with parents that are well off. So…their wedding will be a black tie affair at Cipriani in New York City on Memorial Day Weekend. Which means I need a Black Tie Event Dress. Did I mention this is going to be fancy?
Now, I do love getting all gussied up to go out with the girls or a date with my husband, but I have NEVER been to a black tie affair, better yet, a black tie wedding in New York freaking City. So, I need help. Below are two the dresses I’ve whittled down from about 20 from Rent The Runway. To save some money, I decided to rent my dress since I’ll never use it again (probably) and I don’t want to take up prime closet real estate by holding on to a fancy dress. The problem here is I can’t decide between them. Here’s some information to help you decide for me:
- The event is in the evening, after 6pm on a Saturday.
- The couple is very laid back and VERY fun, love to dance, but the venue is pretty high class.
- I feel like an oompa loompa in a long dress (i’m 5’4″) but I don’t mind them if I feel good in it.
- My Husband (and my military brothers) are all going to be in Tuxedos. So yeah, I need to look somewhat presentable.

Help me! Let me know in the comments which one you like better as my Black Tie Event Dress: Golden Sparkle or Navy Grecian?
This week i’m hooking up with Jo-Lynne of Musings of a Housewife for Fashion Friday. Come check out the rest of the posts!
Nice choices!! I honestly love both but I think the gold one is my favorite of the two. 🙂
I like the blue. I’m not really a gold person though. I think it depends on your skin tone. I’m way to pale for gold! LOL.
I think the gold would look gorgeous on you.
I love the gold dress. I think it has just the right amount of sparkle. You will look fabulous in this dress!
How exciting! Both dresses are very pretty so I can understand your dilemma. If both styles and colors are equally flattering on you, I would recommend the navy Grecian. I’m probably being overly conscientious/conservative but if I were attending my first black tie affair and it was someone else’s wedding (i.e. someone else’s day to be in the spotlight), I would stick to something a little more conservative while still being appropriately dressed for the occasion.
Good luck making your decision! Will look forward to seeing pictures. 🙂
Oh, no doubt! The golden sparkle!!
Sparkle dress! 100% It would look amazing on you (I’m attached to sparkle, its the inner TSwift in me haha).
Wow, those dresses are stunning and very elegant! It is always fun to dress up and feel like a million bucks. Those dresses would definitely do it.
Yes Amber, but which one should I choose? lol
Hands down the Badgley Mischka Sequin gown, that’s my pick.
I like the gold dress. It sounds like a lovely wedding, have a great time!
Being practical here. Which dress do you already have shoes & evening type bag to match/co-ordinate – That is also a BIG expense if yu need to buy.
Personally, after watching some of the recent award shows I think the blue. Appears to me that all over sparkle is passe and one shoulder is coming in.
The gold dress is absolutely stunning. Definitely go with that one. Have you checked the stores online, to see if you can find something similar to buy and wear again.
Gold sparkle for sure! I don’t know why this popped into my mind, but it looks like something a “bond” girl would wear. Lol
As classy as the black dress is, I really like the gold one!
Navy Grecian
If you haven’t already chosen, I’m casting my vote for the blue b/c:
1) the guys won’t be in uniform so you won’t blend in with their blues (Is the groom wearing a uniform or tux? Just curious)
2) by Memorial weekend, you’re running the risk of a very hot weekend and the gold just looks ‘heavy’ (ie: too warm for humidity)
3) if the in-laws are THAT classy, then you should steer towards understated (which is always classier). This isn’t an awards dinner, AND you don’t want to, ahem, outshine the bride.
Have fun!!
