When it comes to grilling, our family is all about meat. Yup, we are not on a vegetarian or vegan diet here(although my son is slowly moving towards that lifestyle), so as soon as the weather gets nicer, we throw anything and everything over charcoal. The best part of this is seeing my Husband and my parents get animated over marinade and spice rub recipes. It becomes a real competition. So when Walmart gave us the chance to have a real grilling competition, we jumped at the chance. The Walmart Steak Grill-Off became an all out battle.
The contestants? My Husband and my Mom.
The ingredients? Walmart USDA choice premium beef.
The prize? Being crowned the King(or Queen) of the grill for the rest of the grilling season.
The contestants chose to use Walmart’s Ribeye steaks as their canvas for grill marks. Both used some type of marinade while one decided to use a rub in addition to the marinade. Steaks were grilled for about 8 to 10 minutes, then it was time to hit up the judges.
On today’s panel we have, My Dad, My sister, and of course, me! I couldn’t miss out on tasting these beauties! We didn’t know who created each steak, so there was no bias (or bribery).
The contestants right before the verdict
The winner? My Mom! She won 2 to 1 for her marinaded and spice rubbed ribeye. It was extremely juicy and tender, as was my husband’s, but that extra rub really did the trick. Her recipe is listed below. And yes, she’s now the Queen of the Grill.
Tropical Marinaded RibEye
Serving: 2 to 4 steaks
Marinade:
3/4 cup Dole Orange/Pineapple juice
1 tablespoon minced garlic
1 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
2 teaspoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
4 sprigs fresh rosemary
Spice Rub:
2 teaspoons dried rosemary
2 teaspoons smoked salt
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon black pepper
Mix together all of the marinate ingredients and place in a large ziploc bag. Place steaks inside, close the top and place in the fridge for no more than 3 hours.
Once the grill is set up to get hot, pull your steaks out from the fridge, mix together your spice rub, and rub each steak with the mixture.
Grill the steak to your liking. We grilled ours for 8 to 10 minutes because we like medium steak. Let rest for 3 to 5 minutes, then chow down!
