I’m so excited that plaid is one of the edgy trends for this fall and winter. My excitement was increased when I found out that my local Sears was fully stocked on not only the plaid trend, but other affordable fashion trends, like studs and (faux) leather. What better way to celebrate the return of the staple piece of grunge than to share 5 ways to rock edgy plaid.

Stick with a small pattern

If you’re a mom, or a women looking to add plaid to your fall wardrobe, stick with a plaid shirt with a uniform and small pattern. I picked this red plaid shirt by US Polo Assn because of it’s simplicity. It’s more of a gingham style than a full on plaid. Sears was well-stocked in plaid shirts with these patterns, so it was difficult to choose. A small pattern on a plaid shirt will ensure that the shirt stays feminine but edgy. It also makes it easy to accessorize.

Mix edgy plaid with other hot trends

Don’t ever be afraid to mix a trend. You can do it subtly and still be able to wear an outfit to the bus stop or PTA meetings. The stud and faux leather trend was very prevalent in Sears fashion sections, and I squealed with joy. I also showed off my finds in my Google+ album. Both trends are so easy to dress up or down, especially with a plaid shirt. I loved the faux leather detail on the side of these Kardashian Kollection leggings (only 16.99!).

The trio of bangles with stud detail blew my mind as well. They’re stretchy bangles so they’ll fit any wrist size, and the sleek silver color makes them perfect to pair with any other outfit.

One color is enough

When it comes to plaid shirts, shirts or pants, we all are tempted to grab a piece with a bunch of cool colors within it. Don’t do it! Stick with one color that you absolutely love on you. For my Sears style, I went with red to give any future outfit I create a “pop.” Pick a burgundy, colbalt blue or hunter green shirt; all three colors are on trend for the Fall.

Pull it together with a neutral

Edgy outfits can be very daunting, especially when you’re thinking of rocking them to the grocery store or doctor’s appointment. The key is to build a neutral into the mix. I went with this grey cardigan by windsor. I found it at Sears on clearance for 7.99. Not a big cardigan fan? Go with a v-neck sweater and show that pop of plaid at the top.

Rock a cool shoe

When it comes to the plaid trend, cool shoes just up the awesome factor. Try to find a pair of flats with the spike or leather detail, or go straight 90s with a pair of motorcycle boots. These boots are my “flats” for fall and winter since they are comfy but add a bit of edge to any outfit. Since plaid can be a bit “home on the range,” adding an edgy pair of shoes can make it chic.

When it comes to fashion for moms and busy women, Sears really has the secret. I enjoyed the choices of trendy pieces, and of course, the prices.  I also loved using my Shop Your Way account and earning points and rewards for shopping for fall. Those pants you’re wearing are my favorite thing ever. So, so cool.

Great styling, again! Edgy extras and pants make the gingham (plaid?) look a lot more interesting … grunge classic. Who knew it would ever be regarded as mainstream? So cool without belaboring the point. You rock, of course!

Aww thank you Jan! Yes, I think we can “dress up” plaid this season without going overboard. It’s the total opposite of what we did in the 90s lol.
