When Chevy asked if I wanted to go on an amazing adventure of apple picking at Wilkins Fir and Fruit Farm in upstate New York, and then bake an apple pie in brooklyn, I had to say “heck yeah!” When I found out that I could bring my little Duchess with me, my excitement increased. Each year, we take the kids apple and pumpkin picking, and we nosh on our bounty for what seems like months after. This year, we got to enjoy the fall foliage on a ride through New York, and in an apple red 2014 Chevy Impala, no less. We were destined to pluck those apples like gangstas.
The husband and Sonny joined us for apple picking, and 1/2 a bushel of McIntosh apples later, we were spent. The kids always love time on farms, orchards or any type of nature. As parents we love to teach them small lessons through fun experiences. The Duchess learned (from her brother, no less) that caterpillars in an orchard have plenty to eat, since there are so many apples everywhere. My husband taught my son how to find the best apples to pick, and why you should look for the ones high up in the tree.
On our ride back into the city, I caught both of my kids admiring the changing leaves, and my little girl staring at the navigation in the Chevy Impala as we got closer and closer to The Brooklyn Kitchen. I told her that it would be just her and I making pies, and she was elated over our mother/daughter date. Once there, Chef Kat Dazzo of The Brooklyn Kitchen shared her secrets to a flaky pie crust (lots of butter, very cold water, and no over-mixing), and a recipe for a delicious apple pie filling.
Big thanks to The New York Mom for taking this picture!
We made our own mini apple pies and even some squash curry pocket pies that were to die for. The Duchess learned how to make a lattice crust and that topping your crust with cashews and brown sugar can only create an awesome dessert.
We all enjoyed our day of fall fun, and riding in that Chevy Impala! It was such a smooth ride, and had plenty of room for our family of for. Also? The trunk space is bananas. We could have taken home most of the orchard if we wanted too, along with about 20 pumpkins. Anyway, a big thanks to Chevy and Drive the District for inviting us and be sure to follow me on instagram to see all of the fun things we’ll be making with our apples.
