How to clean your closet for Fall - 4 simple tips

Every fall, my family and I do our semi-annual purge. We go through our clothing from the previous two seasons and decide if it’s worth keeping for the next 6 months, or if we need to donate it. I’ve been asked a few times how I can thrift, donate and create great outfits from the few items I keep in my closet and dresser drawers. It’s because we do this purge and I’m able to imagine the outfits for the next 3 to 4 months. So, I’d like to share some of my tips with you and show you how to clean your closet for Fall.

Tip 1: Stop being sentimental

Yup I said it. Clothing can have such a sentimental attachment to it’s owners, but it all actually, it’s just cloth. It’s meant to warm us up, and make us feel “dressed” for the day. I do love fashion, but I love keeping classic pieces even more. Give yourself permission to let go of pieces that may not fit your style, or that really should just be taken out of your closet.

Tip 2:  Keep the classics

This works not only for adults, but for children as well. Pay attention to classic, timeless pieces and not only keep them for the next season, but take better care of them. The classic pieces are great for hand-me-downs or for consignment re-sales. Also, if you find trendy seasonal pieces over the next few months, you’ll be using your classic pieces of clothing as a foundation to your outfit.

Tip 3: Try it ALL on

The best way to decide if you are going to keep clothing is to see it on the model: you! Yes, you must try on each piece, even the shoes, to see if they still fit properly and look great on your body. If something doesn’t look great or doesn’t make you feel great, let it go immediately and don’t look back.

Tip 4: Clean your closet, literally

We tend to wait until spring to really clean our spaces within the home, but this is perfect time to spray down those closet shelves and drawers. If you pulled out your favorite sweater, and saw it covered with dust bunnies, you’d freak. Get to cleaning.

Tip 5: Donate responsibly

The best part of the purge is being able to donate the items you won’t use to those in need. Pass your pieces to Goodwill and you’ll not only be supporting a company who gives back, but your donations will create hours of service programs right in your own community. Goodwill has this cool  Donation Impact Calculator where you can see how much your donations affect local programs. You can use their locator tool to find a Goodwill near you, if you don’t already know where it is.

I hope these few but fabulous tips will help you to purge this season. Do you have any tips to share on how to clean your closet for fall?

I really need to do this… but I have a closet for Warm weather and a closet for cold weather. That way I never have to switch out my closets. I do go through my clothing periodically and get rid of things I don’t wear.

A new Goodwill opened and I have been shopping like crazy! But I do need to use your tips to get rid of those things that I am never ever ever going to wear again! I think this is my project for the weekend.

I totally agree! I struggle so much cleaning out my closet because I’m far too attached. I need to get over it and clean that closet out!

Great tips. My general rule of thumb is, if we haven’t touched it in 6 months or more – it goes in the trash. I just finished a huge cleaning spree of both of my boys rooms – 5 trash bags later……

My shelves fell down in my closet months ago and still have not been put back up. I am thinking my husband is never going to do it so I better start. I will be cleaning our closet when I do and could use all the tips.

I really like those tips! I clean out my closet every Spring and Fall, but throw my things away. I don’t even know why I never thought about donating them! I will definitely do it this time 🙂

Great tips! Living in Florida we basically have 2 seasons: hot and hotter. So no real need to clean out the closets. We basically live in shorts and flip-flops all year round!

It’s hard to not be sentimental but I’ve had to learn to do it. It’s helped me move out some of the clutter, that is for sure.

Love these tips, one tip that I was given for my closet was to take everything out and put the hangers back in the opposite way and when you wear it turn the hanger around so that way you can see what you have or have not worn to help make some tough choices

I try to do this each season but I have a problem with being sentimental! I always keeps a few things I should donate.

  18. 10.25.13

These are good tips. It’s easy to skip the cleaning and then it gets to a point where you are just too overwhelmed to ever want to get to it! I donate to Good Will all the time!

Great tips. I learned a long time ago to spend a little more on classics, they last forever and are well worth the money. The are more frugal in the long run. I will have to go and clean out my closets!

You are going to laugh at me, I have three 6f closets. I wanted to do a segment and share them, you’ve just inspired me! You also inspired me to clean and throw things away and donate! Love your ideas!

Although I love our home, one of the unfortunate things about it is that it doesn’t have a lot of closet space. As a result, we have filled our existing closet space to the rafters. I think I will definitely take these tips into consideration when I am reorganizing our closet space.

  23. 10.26.13

I really need to go through my closet as well and get all those clothes that I don’t wear or have no intentions of wearing out of it. I do hold on to stuff for sentimental reasons but I do need to learn to let go.

  24. 10.26.13

Thank you for these great tips here — will come in handy for my family’s closets!

  25. 10.26.13

I am very sentimental that’s why I still have the clothes that literally my kids cannot wear anymore. I have to admit that I have to get the closets clean so badly to make spaces for the new clothes.
