It’s time for another edition of our monthly “Things to Buy” series. This month, we’ll be listing what to buy in April that will yield the best savings. Be sure to check out savings recommendations for March, since most of them will still be great finds this month.
Winter Clearance
This is THE MONTH for the best clearance deals on anything that has to do with winter. Whether it’s clothing, shovels, snow blowers, or home decorations, you will find deals all over your area at department stores.
Here’s a tip: get one or two sizes up when it comes to kids clothing. They will be able to fit the items by next fall, or you’ll at least have brand new items that you can sell to your local or online thrift stores.
Online Thrift Stores
Speaking of thrift stores, now will be a great time to stock up on winter and spring items that are on display at your favorite online thrift store. I love checking in on ThredUp to see what items they have on clearance not only for me, but for the kids.
I’ve found quite a few finds just this morning. If you are looking for an Easter outfit for less, check out Twice. They have more upscale items on deep discount. Not into online thrift stores? Check out your local thrift stores for sales, as well.
Cleaning Products
It’s spring cleaning time and the cleaning products sales are running rampant. This would be a great time to stock up on your favorite cleaners until the fall cleaning sales start up. Also, if you’re looking to use more natural or organic cleaning products, now would be the time to look for great deals in stores and online.
Jewelry
With graduation, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day on the loom, now is a great time to utilize sales on jewelry. Department stores are starting up their jewelry sales early in the month, to bypass the mad dash next month when everyone realizes that it’s time to get Mom or your resident college graduate a nice gift.
Here’s a tip: see if the department store, like Macy’s, has an app that has mobile coupons for you to use. Also, make sure to shop for Dad! We recently found a great deal on Macys.com for a nice watch that my own father has been eyeing up for months. At 50% off, it was an awesome and unexpected deal.
Craft Supplies
Craft projects will be in full swing this month, especially for those who want to create Easter, Passover and general springtime activities for kids.
While looking for craft supplies at your craft store, make sure to keep an eye out for spring decorations that might work well during a summer party.
Red, white and blue items will work well at your Independence day barbecues, while pastels would look amazing during a summer birthday party for a little girl.
Gym Memberships
Now is the time that gyms are hurting for business and offer great coupons and deals on memberships. Check out your local gyms and price out each deal. Make sure that you aren’t going to pay the same amount that a member who bought a year membership is paying.
Since you will essentially be buying a 9 month membership, rather than a 12 month one, make sure that each month is yielding a good discount. In our home, we will only pay for a mid-year membership if it comes out to 10 dollars a month or less.
Also remember that membership prices are negotiable! Get them to come down in price with a little persuasion.
Running Shoes
The weather is warming up, so sports and shoe stores are putting running shoes and other kinds of sneakers on sale to entice customers to get outside. Other outside items will be on sale as well, like small coolers and foldable tailgate chairs. If you find a great pair that you really love, buy two and switch out your running shoes in about 6 months.
I really need some new shoes, so this is timely! Thank you!
You’re welcome, Gena! Come back and share the cute shoes you end up buying. I looooove shoes 😀 .
great tips, we live in Florida so we wear summer like clothes almost all year long and keep an eye open for them all year long too
You Florida residents have it made! Now’s a good time to look at sneaker deals, though. Lots of outside activities in that lovely state of yours.
Yes, I have been restocking the cleaning supplies. I also go through my medicine cabinet and update all the things we need for Spring allergies, etc. Thanks for the reminder on clearance sales!
I love that tip! Now is a great time to go through the medicine cabinet, and maybe even clean it a bit with all those cleaning supplies. Thanks for commenting, Andrea!
I’m definitely stocking up on craft supplies!
Let the spring and summer activities begin!
I had no idea they even had online thrift stores! How cool is that!
Oh yes. It’s my new favorite thing in life lol. I can thrift from home. Check out ThredUp, Kelly. I think you’ll love that site.
Thanks for reminding me about thredUP! My daughter is outgrowing a lot of her clothes so it was perfect timing!
You’re welcome, Xandra!
My hubby just got a great pair of sneakers on sale. I love the fact that we can finally get outside more!!!
Yes, finally we get spring in the Northeast. I’m looking forward to buying a new pair of sneakers, as well.
Great tips Amiyrah! I have to show the jewelry one to my husband:)
Estelle
Ha! Yes, let him know that now is the time to buy that wonderful Mother’s Day gift 😉 .
So helpful! This time a few years ago I picked up a $350 coat for under $70.
Now that was a great deal! Wishing you even more awesome deals this spring, my friend!
I’ve never heard of Twice! Gonna have to check it out.
Good to know about the cleaning products! I will be doing this at the end of the summer when Daniel and I get our new apartment. Will be good to not spend a fortune on getting cleaning products from scratch! Thanks!
I think its time for me to switch gyms. I heard an ad for one of the gyms in my area, 10 bucks with unlimited training. Umm hello! LOL
Oh yes, at that price, you HAVE to switch! Ha! Keep me posted on how the new gym works out for you.
