How To Make Pizza Sauce (From Tomato Paste)

Sharing is caring!

Check out this super simple recipe for how to make pizza sauce with tomato paste and other simple ingredients you probably always keep in your pantry!

Thanks to my family’s obsession with pizza, and our vow to make our own, I’ve found an easy pizza sauce recipe! Bonus: it’s a pizza sauce from tomato paste, and doesn’t require cooking.

This post includes affiliate links for products that may be helpful in creating your pizza sauce. If you use them, there is no extra cost to you, but I do make a few pennies.

Friday night is pizza night around here. It will be until my kids (and husband) grow out of the habit.

We strive to make as many homemade meals as we can to save money, and we tend to make our pizzas on pizza night as well.

When we lived in NJ, there were quite a few pizza joints we love to order from, but now we’re in the Midwest.

The pizza selections here leave something to be desired, but I’m a Jersey girl, so I’ll always be snobby about pizza.

Making Your Own Sauce Is Simple

I admit to my snobbiness, which means I need to make my own pizza to make up for how picky I am.

Making your own pizza is so fun, and can’t be beat. You also can’t beat making an easy pizza sauce recipe, especially one that saves time and money.

Do you make your own pizza at home? If so, let us know what weeknight you do pizza night.

Friday seems to be the consensus, but I’d love to know if you have it on a different weekday.

Summer is a great time to start making your own pizzas, since you can make some delectable ones right on the grill.

I love to make a few batches of pizza dough, freeze, then thaw the night before pizza night, or when we plan to grill. A grilled pizza is a fun way to keep our Friday tradition going through the warmer months.

If I need a quick snack for the kids, I also make them pizza English muffins. I toast the muffins, spread on the sauce, top with shredded cheese, then microwave for about 30 seconds.

A good pizza needs a good pizza sauce. Below, I’m showing you how to make this easy pizza sauce recipe that we’ve used for years, and is made from canned tomato paste!

I would also suggest you invest in a pasta maker … you can roll the dough thro and make flatbreads. These freeze well, and you can use all your weekly leftovers as toppings. 😉

Wish I could tell you how much pizza we have eaten in our house over the last 37 years but I have no idea. Tonight we are making pizza waffles (awesome stuff), I am pretty sure we have found our new forever pizza sauce. It is wonderful without waiting. It must be heavenly after 2 hours or longer.

“Scrounging” around the kitchen today looking for something to make for supper tonight. I had tomato paste in the pantry and searched Pinterest for recipes. This is perfect, thanks for sharing. I have the bread machine making the pizza dough, your fabulous sauce, frozen meatballs, red bell peppers, onion and cheeses to make a great pizza on the grill.

I thought I found my favorite store-bought pizza sauce until I tried your recipe. This one tastes better, inexpensive and I is home-made! Thank you for sharing! Any thoughts on how long it could stay in the fridge and if it could be frozen?

      Amiyrah said:

Oh my goodness! Thank you for that compliment! It will last 5 to 7 days in the fridge, and you can freeze it for up to 6 months. I would put it in a freezer bag, get all the air out of it, and freeze it flat so it defrosts quickly for you when you need it. Thanks for trying the recipe!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

I don’t know how I happened upon this recipe, but it’s the greatest! I’ve been making pizzas on my gas grill for a couple of years. I finally got the crust “almost” right – you even helped to make it “totally right” for us. But I could never find a pizza sauce recipe that my wife and I (in our 70’s) like. The only change I made was to add a pinch of baking soda to help offset the acid in the tomatoes (helps with acid reflux). I found that the recipe makes 16 ounces, perfect for dividing into four 4-ounce zip-top bags for freezing. It freezes well and just needs to have the bag in warm water for a few minutes to thaw it. BTW, I erased the file that I had marked “Doug’s Pizza Sauce”. No comparison!

    Thank you again, Doug

Oh my Goodness!! I will never ever buy pizza sauce in store again! I have made this pizza sauce recipe about 10 times already! No additives…Yay!!! Today I have my grandsons here and they are building their own pizzas. I have and am using Naan Bread for the crust. The best flavor combo ever….crust is crispy after baked and with a slight lip on the bread the sauce stays on. Thank you so much for sharing with us… Christine.

Amiyrah, this is a great pizza sauce. My late husband was from N.Y. and we moved N.J. where pizza is a serious business. I now have moved back to the big “D” area where they have never even heard of white pizza or salad pizza. So I’m making my own pizza with this wonderful sauce. Thanks for sharing this with all of us. For a different twist sometimes I use my basil-garlic-oregano infused olive oil.

Not going to lie, I wasn’t expecting this sauce to taste as good as it does – this recipe is packed with flavor & the perfect addition to our weekly pizza nights. I had a more complicated recipe I was planning on trying, but I was in a pinch & already had all the ingredients to this recipe on hand & thought – why not. BOY AM I GLAD I DID!! Who needs complicated when simple can taste this good!!

Thanks for sharing, this recipe is a keeper!!

Since it is already made from a canned item, I would advise against canning it. It does last about a month in the fridge, though.
