The Idea of Adoption & The Dave Thomas Foundation

Sharing is caring!

As a Wendy’s ambassador, I’m excited to share this sponsored post with you. All opinions and drool-worthy experiences are my own.

A while back, I wrote about how our family isn’t done having children. We’ve been asked over and over if “we’re done,” so we addressed that question head on. The one thing we didn’t dive into is the idea of adoption. We love children. So far, we’ve been pretty good at raising them (they’re all alive, praise God!). Adding the idea of adoption to our hearts doesn’t seen too off kilter for us. So why haven’t we talked about it publicly?

I have no clue. Maybe it’s because it’s something the the husband and I haven’t panned out fully. If we were to take on an adoption journey, how would that work with our finances? What age of child would we be comfortable with? Will we add one child or more? These questions haven’t been answered, but I’ll share something with you all: if we ever do adopt, I’d love to adopt a teenager.

I’ve thought over and over again about this, and I can’t get past the idea of adopting a teen into our family. Teenagers are less likely to get adopted, often leaving the foster care system at the age of 18 with no support, no jobs, and no idea how to move through life. I still remember my time as a teenager. So unsure, unsteady, and full of emotion and fear over what the heck I was going to do with the life I was given. I can’t imagine if I would have had to endure all of that without the support of a family. This is why the Dave Thomas Foundation is so near and dear to my heart. They are determined to help children find their forever homes, via the #Share4Adoption campaign.

Wendy's Cause Cup

Wendy’s is bringing back the #Share4Adoption campaign to help children in foster care find their forever homes. Wendy’s will donate $5 to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption for each customer who posts a picture of themselves completing the heart on specially designed Wendy’s cups to social media with #Share4Adoption. Wendy’s will donate up to $500,000 to support the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption’s efforts to find permanent, loving homes for the more than 100,000 children waiting in foster care in the United States.

Wendy’s® founder, Dave Thomas, worked tirelessly over the course of his career to find forever homes for children in foster care. As a child of adoption himself, Dave made it a pillar of the organization, and gave it a national platform by creating the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption in 1992. Wendy’s partnership with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption ensures that Dave’s legacy is forever honored and his great work will continue on, helping kids all across the country.

That’s my little secret: if it’s in our life journey, I’d love to adopt a teenager. Maybe one day, we’ll make it happen. Hopefully one day soon.

I have been watching The Fosters on Netflix so I have been thinking a lot about the Foster Care System. Between work and my two kids I just don’t know if we would be able to add more to our life at the moment but I have thought, as they get older, that it might be something we could look into.

I feel you, Sarah. I’ve had the same thoughts, but I decided to still be open to the possibility. I’m hoping being open will turn into a passion, then action. It’s great to at least think about it, and talk about it, especially online.

As someone who was adopted by my mom’s second husband and have cousins that were adopted I love this. I really feel like we need to make adoption a stronger force in this country. Love that you are talking about this.

This birthmother of two–the oldest will be 22 in a couple weeks–says: Awesome idea!! And Foster to Adopt is the frugal way to follow that path.

I’m so glad you’re an ambassador for them! I reached out to them last year as the cause really spoke to me, but didn’t hear anything- so glad you’re on board!

We adopted three teens in 2006. All three are now living independently and making their way in the world!

That is awesome! We did an adoption 5 years ago- hardest and best thing we ever did. There is a great need- pray that God will open doors and direct you.
