Big Things To Buy For Our New Home

Big things to buy for your new home

Welcome to our new series! With the purchase of our very first home, there are a lot of things that we’ll need to buy to fill it. Since we are new homeowners, and have never lived in an actual house (apartment renters here!), we are slowly realizing the things that we need for a new house, and want to make it feel like our home. This series will highlight those items.

Did you know that when you buy a house, you need to buy things to fill it? Yeah, that’s a new one for us. We are starting on our home ownership journey, and we have noticed that those things we’d used for free in our rentals, are now things that we need to purchase on our own. Adulting is so interesting. Here’s a list of the large and somewhat expensive items we need to buy for the new home, and a few things that we decided we want but don’t necessarily NEED.

Refrigerator

Oh that’s right! We can’t take our fridge with us because IT DOESN’T BELONG TO US. Why we didn’t realize this until recently, I’ll never know. We decided that we want a fridge with french doors and a drawer freezer. Once we figured that out, we started to look at prices within The Home Depot, Lowes, and Sears. We found a Whirlpool fridge that we love, so we did some price comparison of it from each store. We ended up getting the better deal at Lowes.

Dining Table

We actually found the PERFECT table already. We have a lovely dining room table right now, but unfortunately, it won’t fit in our new space. We found a table that includes 6 chairs and a bench. We were adamant about our new table having a bench to match, because the kids will do better with sitting at a bench than in chairs. The baby will be big enough soon to eat at the table without a high chair, so we’re thinking ahead. Plus, we anticipate lots of family members visiting for the holidays, so we want to make sure there’s room around the table. I can’t wait to show you all the table. It’s going to cost us around 2 thousand dollars, but it is worth it, y’all.

Washer and Dryer

Whew. I feel like this decision took us longer than any other big house purchase decision. Front loader, top loaders, HE compliant, white or stainless steel. So many things to factor when picking a washer and dryer! We decided that since the washer and dryer will be located in the basement, they don’t need to be pretty. White top loaders are just fine with us. Our budget for washer and dryer is under 1000 dollars, so we were looking at the Whirlpool, Maytag, Samsung and GE options at The Home Depot. But, we actually ended up finding a local store that gave us an amazing deal on a Whirlpool cambric set that was originally under 2000 dollars. We paid 899 for the set. Score! What washer and dryer do you have? Let me know in the comments below.

Sofa and Loveseat (and maybe a comfy chair)

Here’s the deal with this: we have been waiting for 5 years to get a new sofa. We bought a used one from a dear friend of mine when she moved to Nashville, and it was quickly ruined (thanks, kids). It’s that micro-fiber kind of couch, so it was doomed to have tons of spots from spills. We found a lovely set at Raymour & Flanigan. but they don’t have that store in Ohio. So, we’re back on the hunt. I would love to buy our set from Wayfair since their furniture is too adorable, but my husband is obsessed with actually sitting on the couch first before we buy it. This is why it took us almost a week to find that first set that both of us liked. Since we will me moving in without a sofa set, I’d love to get this done ASAP. And yes, I’m being spoiled by saying I don’t want to buy, or use, another used sofa. If we have to wait to save up for it, then we’ll wait. New house, new furniture!

A Bed For James

For all of his 2 years of life, Baby James has been sleeping in a playpen. He’s never had his own room, or his own bed. We are so excited to finally give him both! We bought the other kids’ beds from Walmart, and we hope to buy the same one for James. While his twin bed won’t cost too much, it’s still a big purchase for us.

Mobile Kitchen Island

Our new kitchen is a great size, but I would love to have a small island to give me more prep space, and a place to use to display snacks and treats when we have company. I’m pretty sure I’m going to get a mobile kitchen island from Wayfair, since they have the prettiest I’ve ever seen. I would love for it to be mobile, so I can place it at the end of our new table to add more seating space when we have family dinners. Plus, it will be great to use when I do my live videos. It’s not a necessity, but I know it will be useful. I was even thinking of using it as new desk for me, if I buy a stool to go with it. Multi-tasker!

Deep Freezer

This is a semi-need, since we are planning to stockpile again. We haven’t stockpiled food in such a long time, but since we’ll have the space to do so now, we want to purchase a deep freezer for meats, breads, and freezer meals. This purchase will wait until Black Friday, since there are always awesome deals on deep freezers around that time. For years, I’ve been keeping track of the deep freezer deals, and now we’ll get to take advantage. How fun.

These are the big purchases we have on our list for now. It’s going to be fun, and a little bit scary, to spend the money for these items.

Do you have any advice for us, when it comes to these big things to buy for our new home? Let us know n the comments below.

You should ask you family members if they have any of those items that they aren’t using. I believe we have a bunk bed frame that was originally Brandon’s. All you would need to purchase for the baby is a box spring and mattress. ASK YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS!
