If you haven’t heard, we recently moved into our very first home. And if you haven’t heard, I’m pretty shocked right now. I feel liked we’ve been talking about it everywhere. Anyway, since we are new homeowners, we’re learning some very interesting lessons lately. There’s so much you don’t know you need to buy and do when you purchase your first home, so we have claimed these our “moving lessons.”
Did you know that you have to buy weird things when you move into a new home? Weird things like hoses, rakes, snowblowers, LAWN MOVERS?! I think the one frustrating thing we didn’t realize we needed was a shower rod for one of the bathrooms. We had the shower curtain covered, but a shower rod? That was NOT included in the price of the house.
Then, there’s your packing organization. You have to have it. I got lucky with this, because 2 of my online friends shared how they organized their previous moves, and I adapted it to fit our family. I labeled each box with the room it would belong to, and the contents of the box. We also used as many tupperware containers as possible. These two things might have saved my sanity so far. If I hadn’t learned this lesson early, I may not have made it, y’all.
Another lesson: it doesn’t matter if you cleaned and dusted everything before you packed it, you’ll have to clean and dust it all again. I thought I was so smart washing all the dishes, dusting all the furniture and TVs, and packing fragile pieces in clean towels. Guess what? Everything arrived dirty. I don’t know what happened. It’s like dust knows your moving, and decides to pay you a special visit in between the time you pack your boxes on the truck to the time you place them in the new house.
While the dust situation made me cry just a little, I was smart enough to pack Clorox® Triple Action Dust Wipes in my cleaning supplies. I used them on every piece of furniture possible, the tops of plastic containers, and even on all the televisions. Since the house hasn’t been frequented in months, I also wiped down the baseboards, and the tops of the cabinets. I was a dusting fool with the Clorox dust wipes!
The last lesson we learned, so far, is that you will unpack and clean simultaneously. Remember when I said I cleaned the tops of the cabinets? Yeah, that was because I was putting away dishes and realized they were filthy up top. Thank goodness for Clorox® Triple Action Dust Wipes, man.
Well, those are our moving lessons so far. I know there are many more in our future, and we’ll have a grand old time learning them, I’m sure. For now, I’ll be in our garage, very slowly unpacking all the things.
So true about the dust knowing you are moving. After my first move I packed everything dirty [well, not food on the dishes dirty – ya know…] and washed things when I unpacked them. Best wishes!
