Black Panther Review – A Parent’s Honest Opinion
Marvel’s Black Panther hits theaters on February 16th, and everyone is buzzing about it. Being able to attend the world premiere, and see the first official viewing of the film was definitely an honor. As a parent, I made a point of watching every detail and scene of the movie to make a wise decision about allowing my own children to watch the movie during opening weekend. Below is my Black Panther review, from a parent with an honest opinion.
Black Panther Is Visually Stimulating
One of the very first things we noticed during the opening of Black Panther was the bright, dramatic cinematography. The entire movie is visually appealing, so much so you’ll have to see it a few times to catch every intricate part. If you have a child that loves the beauty of a film, they will highly enjoy Black Panther.
It’s A Marvel Movie
Many parents ask us if a Disney, Marvel or Lucasfilm movie is “OK for kids.” This is all relative (we take our kids to see everything Disney…even the 3 year old). But, one thing to keep in mind for Black Panther is this is a Marvel film. There will be fights, bad guys, car chases, and even a few guns. Marvel movies are also known for being longer than the average movie. If your kids have seen prior Marvel films, they will be fine viewing Black Panther. If your child has issues with being still for 2 hours, you may want to wait a few weeks before seeing it with your child, so you can come and go for bathroom breaks without disrupting the viewing experience for others. If you child is not keen on loud noises, you also may want to wait a while.
Inquisitive Kids Need To See Black Panther
There are lots of talking points within this film, and I believe children age 8 and up will come away with many different subjects they will want to explore. From the superficial subjects like “What is Sub-Saharan Africa?“, to more complex subjects like knowing where you come from and figuring out the difference between doing what’s right (for you or for a kingdom), your family we come out of Black Panther with lots of conversation starters to discuss around the dinner table.
Girls Of All Ages Need To See Black Panther
The female empowerment within this film is almost too much to bear, but in the best way possible. If you are raising a girl, she needs to see Black Panther. If you are a woman, you need to see Black Panther. While Black Panther features T’Challa (played by Chadwick Boseman), there is so much strong female energy in this movie. Girls need to see what they are capable of, and this film shows us all exactly that.

Black Kids Need To See Black Panther
There’s no more to say about this. If your child is Black, take them to see this film. As a 35 year old African-American woman, I can’t express how amazing it was walking out of the Dolby theater after seeing this remarkable film. I felt proud to be in the skin I’m in. Just imagine your 7 year old son seeing a king on screen who looks just like him. A king that’s also a superhero, and stands up for what’s right. A Black queen who exhibits refinement, a Black princess who’s the smartest person in the world, and other Black characters who resemble strength, purity, and excellence. If you identify as a Black person, and so do your children, you all need to see Black Panther on opening weekend.
I hope this Black Panther review was helpful. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing exclusive interviews with the cast of Black Panther, so be sure to check back here for all of the inside scoop.

So, in other words, everyone should see ‘Black Panther’.
Almost. Racists, very small children, people that don’t like action movies, and any other curmudgeons should probably skip it ;).
I want racists to see this movie. They are already fearful of Black people, and this film should scare the s#!÷ out of them seeing a vision of what could be… minus the vibranium.

What do you think of a 7 year old seeing it? My daughter has seen Wonder Woman, both Guardians of The Galaxy films, Thor Ragnarok, The Avengers and pretty much all the SW films. Think this is safe for her? I saw one parent mention beheadings which is really the only reason I’m questioning it. I want her to see this film for so many reasons. Thanks!
I just reread what you said and saw that you mentioned if they’ve seen any other Marvel film they will be fine. Yay for comprehension.
Thanks!
Perfect! I hope you and your daughter enjoy the movie!
Hi Collin! I just saw it for the second time, and there were no beheadings in the movie. Not sure why that was mentioned.
