During our most recent trip to L.A., we were able to get sneak peeks of a few ABC shows, including the new comedy, Splitting Up Together.
Splitting Up Together starts Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson, two actors we’re used to seeing in comedic roles, and rightly so. We were able to view the first 3 episodes, and their chemistry was extremely fun to see on-screen. Oliver shared with us that they were able to ad-lib some of the scenes, which means we’re in for a real treat throughout this first season.
Lena and Martin (played by Jenna and Oliver), are a couple who’d lost the love in their marriage, and decide to divorce. With 3 kids to take care of, they opt to handle this family transition by using the “Bird’s Nest” method: one parent will live in the house as the “on-duty” parent taking care of the kids, while the “off-duty” parent will live in the detached garage, doing whatever he or she pleases while switching off every other week. This situation alone created some pretty hilarious situations within the episodes we viewed.
Splitting Up Together is a comedy with heart. Oliver said it best:
“Typically with half hour comedies, you’re mostly invested in the comedy. With this show, you’ll be invested in the people.”
Executive producer Emily Kapnek shared that Splitting Up Together is based on a Danish format of the show, but this American version will focus on topics that weren’t discussed in the original format. She also explained that they focused even more on the children of the show, something that wasn’t done in the original version.
Mae, Lena and Martin’s daughter on Splitting Up Together, just might be my favorite character of the show. She’s a mini feminist with the perfect dead-pan humor; a combination you can’t help but enjoy. Mae is played by Olivia Keville, who I predict to be the breakout star of the show.
From executive producers Ellen DeGeneres, Emily Kapnek (“Suburgatory”), Jeff Kleeman (“Little Big Shots”) and Dean Holland (“Parks and Recreation”) comes “Splitting Up Together,” the story of Lena (Jenna Fischer, “The Office,”) and Martin (Oliver Hudson, “Scream Queens”), whose marriage is reignited by their divorce. The series premieres on TUESDAY, MARCH 27 (9:30-10:00 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network, streaming and on demand.
