If you aren’t familiar with Deric McCabe, you need to be. Deric is the breakout star of Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, and we recently had a chance to sit down with him to talk about his role as Charles Wallace Murry, and the awesome bonus features available on the release of the film on Blu-Ray.
Deric is such a little firecracker, full of energy and comedy. We asked him questions about filming, traveling with the cast to far-off places, and a special popcorn incident he experienced with Oprah Winfrey.
Confidence Is Key
One thing we couldn’t overlook was Deric’s confidence. As a 9 year old actor, he knows he’s very talented and he has no problem telling anyone he speaks to. We highly enjoyed our interview with Deric because he was open and honest with his answers about working on A Wrinkle In Time. It was so refreshing! He also entertained us before our interview with a little dance party, and showed us his cartwheel skills.
The Audition Process
Deric told us that he was nervous about his audition process. He was called in for his first audition, and called back to audition using different scenes. For a kid, he says it was a long process, but he’s glad he got the part.
On Set And Abroad
One of the cool parts of the behind the scenes extras on the A Wrinkle In Time Blu-Ray is the cast’s experience in New Zealand. Ever member of the cast and crew highly enjoyed their time in this magical country, and Deric was no exception. He said New Zealand was his favorite place to film, because the surroundings helped him get into character.
Oprah – The Popcorn Culprit
One of the funniest stories Deric shared with us had to do with his very famous co-star, Oprah Winfrey. Deric, who was wise enough to find out where all the snacks were housed on set, loved making his own popcorn mix in the craft foods tent. He was called to practice a scene, and decided to leave his popcorn for when he finished. To his surprise, he came back to Oprah eating his popcorn! Deric said she was asking who made the delicious popcorn, and he exclaimed that it was his. Instead of being upset, he said “Oprah’s eating my popcorn! That’s so cool!” That was also the first time he met Oprah. What an encounter!

As fantastical as the film’s premise and imagery may seem, “A Wrinkle in Time” centers on a universal human need that feels particularly relevant and relatable today. “This is a story about belonging,” says DuVernay. “It’s about a girl who just doesn’t feel strong in her mind, body and spirit. But through this epic journey, she finds her strength and learns that the center of the universe starts inside her. It’s about Meg feeling like she belongs in the universe and has a mighty part to play… as do we all.”
