When it comes to family TV time, we each have a spot on the couch. I think every family has their “spots.” It’s where each family member feels the most comfortable. Where your butt groove is prominent, and you know exactly where to place your arm so the popcorn bowl fits. It’s your spot.
This is how I know our family is ready for a big screen adventure at home. Everyone hops into their spot while I make the snacks, and I hear pure silence. No one is bickering, and no one is demanding anything. Well, except the baby. He’s always demanding something.
Before we hit our spots on the couch, we have a discussion during dinner about what we’d like to watch together. It becomes a diplomatic discussion, where members remind other members that they got to pick last time, that we watched an animated movie or show two weeks ago, and that this time it would be nice to have an adventure. Then there’s me. I always ask to watch something food related, because…food.
Once we decide on our show or movie of choice, it’s time to get on that couch. The kids take their showers and throw on their pajamas. Daddy takes the corner so he can put his feet up, The Duchess sits next to her daddy, and Sonny Boy hangs his long legs over the other middle cushion.
Did you see how no one sat at the other end of the couch? Because that’s mine. You don’t mess with Mama’s butt groove.
Tonight, we decided to catch up on Star Wars: Rebels. We’ve missed the pass few episodes of the new season because we were out living life. But now? It’s time for these couch potatoes to bond over lightsaber battles.
And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
As your kids get older, family tv time becomes less frequent (teenagers are always busy!) and your spot loses its sanctity. But I’m here to tell you, it’s no less important, and it’s no less fun. We don’t even all fit on the couch any more, since my 22-year-old is home with us for the summer. So I’m sitting in the recliner. But sometimes my 16-year-old will climb into the recliner with me for a cuddle, and let me tell you, life doesn’t get much better than that.
Stephanie, that just made me tear up! I know once they get bigger (and the baby is not a baby), the couch spots are going to get creative. But the fact that your 16 year old cuddled up with you on the couch makes my heart so happy!
