The prices on staple items can’t be beat, and now they are offering more health-conscious pantry staples. Superfoods are all the rage right now, but most can be pretty pricey. Here are affordable superfoods to buy at ALDI.

Coffee

Yes, that morning brew of coffee is a great start to your superfood day. Brewed coffee has lots of antioxidants and potassium. If you decide to leave out the tons of sugar and cream most Americans tend to add to their cup of Joe, coffee can lower rates of stroke and diabetes.

Drink it black for the best benefits. I love that Aldi now offers fair trade coffee, for those of us that are looking to make the world a better place with our purchases. Oh, and it’s affordable!

Rolled Oats

This is a weekly shopping staple for our home. Rolled oats are one the cheapest and healthiest breakfasts. Our kiddos pair it with plain yogurt, Aldi applesauce, a sprinkle of cinnamon, and a spoonful of brown sugar for a protein-packed morning meal. Rolled oats are rich in beta-glucans, which is a fiber that helps lower “bad” cholesterol.

Canned Salmon

Salmon is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, and two cans can easily feed our family of 5. For maximum superfood benefits, we make baked salmon cakes with a side of brown rice and sautéed spinach.

The canned salmon also contains bones, which gives a boost of calcium. The bones are very soft, so we just smash them up, and blend into the salmon cake mixture. What a great, cheap way to add extra calcium to an already inexpensive meal.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is one of the best superfoods to buy at ALDI, and you can easily incorporate into your diet. Just a small amount can have a big affect on your body.

This oil is chock full of fatty acids, and a regular intake of it can increase our energy, stave off infections, and may lower your risk of heart disease. I’ve snuck coconut oil into the kids’ smoothies, and I’ve cooked potatoes and even scrambled eggs with it. I also oil pull with coconut oil, which gives me an energetic start to my day.

Plain Yogurt

Yogurt is full of friendly probiotics — that good bacteria that boosts your immunity, and keeps your stomach feeling fine on the inside.

Plain yogurt is also full of calcium, potassium and protein, which makes is a great option for breakfast, afternoon snack, or a late night treat when you want to stay away from ice cream. We get a 32 ounce tub of plain yogurt for under 2 dollars at our local Aldi.

This great recipe for black bean soup is a delicious money saver, and hearty to boot! It's a great Meatless Monday meal.

Black Beans

Did you know that black beans contain the same phytochemical, anthocyanin, that makes blueberries blue? Yeah, me neither, until I researched it. Black beans are a great superfood for your heart, since they are a lean protein and contain fiber. I grab a bag of dried beans from Aldi almost every time we shop, to add to our stockpile. Black beans are my favorite, because I can easily turn a bag into black bean soup.
