If there’s ever one cool thing about being a movie buff, it’s seeng the red carpet premieres. The actors wear their best outfits, talk to all of the news outlets about their time filming, and strut into the theater to see their work on a big screen. It sounds so magical. But, there is something even cooler; being part of the red carpet experience, live and in person.
I had the privilege to be invited by Fox Searchlight to attend the green carpet premiere for Battle of the Sexes, starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell. We had amazing seats in front of the theater, and we were able to give a round of applause to all of the actors, producers, and directors before the film even started. Yes, Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Billie Jean King, Andrea Riseborough, Alan Cumming, Austin Stowell, Natalie Morales, Jessica McNamee, Bill Pullman, Elisabeth Shue, Eric Christian Olsen, Sarah Silverman, Nick Britell, Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton were all in attendance to see the film with us.
If you haven’t heard yet, this film is spectacular. The trailers for Battle of the Sexes focus on the him vs her aspect of the movie, but there’s so much more to it. There’s a story of love for oneself, a battle for the right to be who you are, and the determination to make a difference in the world by being proud of our passions, and using to for good. The layers of this film will blow you away.
After the screening, there was an absolutely fun after-party. It was great to attend the party with fellow online writers, and have celebrities like Billie Jean King, Sarah Silverman, Ed Westwick, and “Lonestar” himself, Bill Pullman walk around the party at the same time we were. Surreal!
Not to be outdone by that wonderful night, we were able to attend the press junket where we interviewed the cast and crew of Battle of the Sexes. I was able to live stream both panels for you all the enjoy:
Team Billie Jean
Team Bobby Riggs
Make it you plan to see Battle of the Sexes this weekend. The performances in the film are Oscar worthy, and you’ll want to see it on the big screen.
Battle of the Sexes is now playing nationwide!
The electrifying 1973 tennis match between World number one Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time. The match caught the zeitgeist and sparked a global conversation on gender equality, spurring on the feminist movement. Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposite sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past. Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis courts and animated the discussions between men and women in bedrooms and boardrooms around the world.
