Instant Pot Oatmeal + Oatmeal Bar Ideas

Sharing is caring!

My kids are oatmeal fanatics. OK, so am I. When I got my first Instant Pot, I was terrified to make oatmeal in the Instant Pot because that breakfast was sacred. Well, when I finally made Instant Pot oatmeal, I was hooked.

There are 2 secrets to making the best Instant Pot oatmeal, and one is to always use rolled oats. Check out the other secret, and why oatmeal bars are key.

Making Instant Pot oatmeal using rolled oats changed the game for us. We’d tried making it with quick oats, and we were not impressed. Rolled oats is the way, friends.

This is a very simple breakfast recipe. There are a bunch of these recipes on the internet, but I found out the big secrets. First, rolled oats. Second? More water.

When I tried other recipes, I followed their instructions to use 3 cups of water to 1 cup of oats. No, friend. No. MORE WATER, POR FAVOR!

Instant Pot Oatmeal Ratio – It Needs Ample Water

Why is more water important when you make oatmeal in the Instant Pot? Well, oatmeal expands. If you’ve made an Instant Pot recipe before, like our Instant Pot corn on the cob, you know that liquid is key.

Even in a soup recipe, it’s essential to add another half cup of water or a liquid that won’t scorch in your Instant Pot insert. I view making oatmeal this way similar to making grits, polenta or risotto. You’re using a small amount of the ingredient, but it needs lots of liquid.

Tip: tap the nozzle gently to get your Instant Pot to slowly release the pressure, and keep it from spitting liquid all over the place.

Make An Oatmeal Bar

Want to get your kids more excited about eating oatmeal for breakfast? Give them topping options! This doesn’t take much effort.

Grab 3 or 4 small bowls, and fill them up with toppings you feel comfortable having your kids use. We love Instant Pot oatmeal with brown sugar, so that’s always in one of our bowls.

Other oatmeal bar ingredient ideas:

  • chocolate chips
  • chopped strawberries
  • chopped bananas
  • dried fruit
  • chopped nuts
  • flax seeds

You don’t have to make this fancy. Giving your kids options to add to their oatmeal ensures they will eat most, if not all, of it.
